چکیده
Abstract Quantifying past oxygen concentrations in oceans is crucial to improving understanding of current global ocean deoxygenation. Here, we use a record pore density the epibenthic foraminifer Planulina limbata from Peruvian Oxygen Minimum Zone reconstruct bottom waters Last Glacial Maximum Late Holocene at 17.5°S about 500 meters below sea surface. We found that levels were 40% lower during than (about 6.7 versus 11.1 µmol/kg, respectively). A comparison with other reconstructions region reveals shallow was similar water depth and extent but weaker Holocene. Increased glacial are probably related temperatures (higher solubility), decreased nutrient increased supply by source waters, decrease coastal upwelling.

How cold was the Last Glacial Maximum?
[1] We present a new approach to estimate the magnitude of global-mean cooling (dTLGM) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) relative to the pre-industrial climate, by combining an ensemble of coupled climate model simulations with empirical constraints on regional cooling inferred from proxy data. We have generated a large ensemble of paired runs ( 100) for pre-industrial and LGMboundary condition...
متن کاملRevising the nitrogen cycle in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone.
The oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the Eastern Tropical South Pacific (ETSP) is 1 of the 3 major regions in the world where oceanic nitrogen is lost in the pelagic realm. The recent identification of anammox, instead of denitrification, as the likely prevalent pathway for nitrogen loss in this OMZ raises strong questions about our understanding of nitrogen cycling and organic matter remineralizat...
متن کاملThe Last Glacial Maximum.
We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pac...
متن کاملBenthic phosphorus cycling in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone
Oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) that impinge on continental margins favor the release of phosphorus (P) from the sediments to the water column, enhancing primary productivity and the maintenance or expansion of low-oxygen waters. A comprehensive field program in the Peruvian OMZ was undertaken to identify the sources of benthic P at six stations, including the analysis of particles from the water c...
متن کاملA note on the extent of glaciation throughout the Himalaya during the global Last Glacial Maximum
Quantitative chronologies for the impressive glacial successions that occur throughout the Himalaya have, until recently, been almost totally lacking. Within the last decade two new techniques have promised to remedy this situation. These techniques, optically stimulated luminescence and cosmogenic nuclide surface exposure dating, enable the age of many glacial features to be determined and hav...
